Wei Yuan facts for kids
Wei Yuan (Chinese: 魏源; pinyin: Wèi Yuán) was a smart Chinese scholar. He was born on April 23, 1794, and passed away on March 26, 1857. His birth name was Wei Yuanda. He also had special names like Moshen and Hanshi.
Wei Yuan was from Shaoyang, Hunan province in China. In 1831, he moved to Yangzhou, Jiangsu, and lived there for the rest of his life. He passed a special test called the juren exam. This was part of the Imperial examinations to become a government official.
After his exams, Wei Yuan worked for important leaders like Lin Zexu. He was worried about the problems China faced in the early 1800s. Even though he supported the Qing Dynasty, he suggested many ideas to make the government better.

Wei Yuan's Early Ideas
From a young age, Wei Yuan followed a way of thinking called the New Text school of Confucianism. He was a strong supporter of the statecraft school. This group believed in learning practical things. They thought this was better than just studying old texts.
Improving China's Transport and Defense
Wei Yuan had many ideas to help China. For example, he suggested sending grain to the capital by sea. This was instead of using the Grand Canal. He also wanted to make the Qing Empire's borders stronger. This would help protect the country.
To solve the problem of too many people in China, Wei Yuan had another idea. He thought many Han Chinese people should move to Xinjiang. This was a large area in western China.
Later Concerns and Writings
Later in his life, Wei Yuan became very concerned about the Western powers. He worried about their ships and armies. He also thought a lot about how to defend China's coast.
Books About History and War
Wei Yuan wrote a book called A Military History of the Holy Dynasty (《聖武記》, Shèngwǔjì). The last two parts of this book were translated into English. They were about the First Opium War. Wei Yuan also wrote another book just about the First Opium War (《道光洋艘征撫記》, Dàoguāng Yángsōu Zhēngfǔ Jì).
Today, Wei Yuan is best known for his book from 1844. It is called Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms. This book included information about Western countries. This information was gathered by Lin Zexu during and after the First Opium War.
New Government Ideas
After the Opium War, Wei Yuan suggested that British India could be a target for China. He also proposed creating a special government group. This group would be in charge of translating foreign books and ideas.
