Weil am Rhein is found at 47°35′42″N 7°36′39.6″E / 47.59500°N 7.611000°E. It is in the Lörrach district within the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The town's edge meets France to the west and Switzerland to the south. This includes the special point where all three countries meet.
Locally, Weil am Rhein is in a region known as Markgräflerland. The town's location near the Rhine River and the Black Forest gives it a special climate. This climate is great for growing grapes to make wine.
A Look Back in Time
Weil am Rhein was first mentioned in records way back in the year 786. Its original name was Willa. People think this name might have come from the Roman Empire.
In October 1702, a French general named the duc de Villars crossed the Rhine here. He fought a battle called the Battle of Friedlingen during the War of the Spanish Succession. Weil am Rhein was badly damaged because of this fight.
For a long time, farming was the main job in the town. But in the 1800s, Weil am Rhein started to grow a lot. This was helped by its good connections for transport. A big railway yard was built in 1913 to connect Weil am Rhein to Basel. Swiss textile factories also opened in the Friedlingen area of town. In 1934, a harbor was built on the Rhine River.
After the Second World War, more people moved to Weil am Rhein. This was because many refugees and people without a home needed a place to live. Between 1971 and 1975, the nearby towns of Ötlingen, Haltingen, and Märkt joined Weil am Rhein. This made Weil am Rhein a much bigger town.
Since 2014, a tram line from Basel in Switzerland now crosses the border. It ends right in Weil am Rhein, making it easy to travel between the two places.
