Weir was founded by early settlers. One important person was Thomas Calvin Weir. He came to Williamson County in 1856. He bought land and became a successful farmer.

Weir and Townsville Communities
In the late 1800s, two communities grew. They were Weir and Townsville. Churches and schools were important to both. Calvin Weir's daughter, Lucy, ran the post office and a small store in Townsville.
The Railroad Arrives
Things changed in 1893 when the Georgetown and Granger Railroad came through Weir. It did not go through Townsville. This was a big deal!
In 1903, a bigger railroad company, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Rail-Road (MKT), bought the line. Most people from the area moved to Weir. The town of Weir was officially started that year.
The MKT railroad also created the Katy Lake Resort. This resort was on the river at Towns Mill Dam. It brought tourists to the area. The Townsville post office moved to Weir. New businesses opened, and the town grew.
Challenges and Growth
Weir faced some tough times. A flood in 1913 damaged the resort and businesses. There was also a bad drought. Then came World War I and the Great Depression. These events made Weir's population shrink for a while.
But Weir started to grow again in the mid-1900s. In 1987, the people of Weir voted to make it an official city.
Today, Weir has an active fire station. Another fire station is run by the county.
