A Look at Wellington's Past
How Wellington Began: The 1800s
Wellington was first planned out in 1871. It was named after the Duke of Wellington. In 1872, it became the county seat of Sumner County. This happened after it won against another town called Sumner City.
In the early days, the town's economy grew thanks to cattle herders. They came through on the Chisholm Trail, which was a famous route for moving cattle. The first post office in Wellington opened in July 1871.
In 1887, a railway company built a train line through Wellington. This line later became part of the Union Pacific Railroad. Many local people still call it the "Rock Island" railroad.
On May 27, 1892, a very strong tornado hit Wellington. It destroyed 100 homes and 30 businesses. Sadly, 12 people in the town lost their lives.
Wellington Today: The 2000s
In 2020, Wellington held a contest to design a new flag for the city. After getting ideas from the public, a design by Shayna Templeton was chosen. This new flag, featuring wheat stalks, was shown in 2021.
