Wellsville's Past: A Look at History
Wellsville was officially planned and laid out in 1856. It was named after Charles Wells. He was the person who originally owned the land where the city now stands. A post office opened in Wellsville in 1857 and has been helping people send mail ever since.

Wellsville is located in the northwestern part of Montgomery County. It is found along Missouri Route 19. The city is about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Montgomery City. Montgomery City is the main town, also known as the county seat. Wellsville is also about 22 miles (35 km) southeast of the city of Mexico.
The city covers a total area of about 1.54 square miles (3.99 square kilometers). Only a very small part of this area, about 0.002 square miles (0.01 square kilometers), is water. Wellsville is on high ground. Rainwater from the city flows in different directions. Some water goes east into White Oak Creek and northwest into Little Coon Creek. These creeks are part of the Cuivre River system, which flows east to the Mississippi River. Other water flows southwest into Coal Branch. This branch is part of the Loutre River system, which flows south to the Missouri River.
