A Look Back at Wernersville's History

Wernersville as a Resort Town

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Wernersville was a popular resort area. People from big cities like Philadelphia and New York City would travel here. They came to relax and enjoy the cool mountain air from South Mountain. It was easy to get to, as it was a stop on the Reading Railroad.

Many large hotels were built for these visitors. Some famous ones included Galen Hall, Bynden Wood, Grand View, and the Highland Hotel. Some of these places were even called sanatoriums. These were special places for people to rest and get better from illnesses. For example, they helped people with conditions like tuberculosis. One of the most well-known was Dr. Robert Walter's Mountain Park.

Over time, most of these old resort hotels have disappeared. Some were destroyed by fire or torn down. Others were changed into different kinds of buildings. However, some smaller houses that were part of the resorts are now private homes.

Important Buildings and Institutions

In 1891, the Wernersville State Hospital opened. It was first known as the State Asylum for the Chronic Insane. The original hospital buildings are still standing today. The State Hospital is still in use.

There is also a Jesuit Center in Wernersville. It has a small community of Jesuits, who are members of a Catholic religious order. This place used to be a training center for new Jesuits. Later, this training center moved to Syracuse, New York.

Two historic buildings in Wernersville are very important. The Lerch Tavern and Wertz Mill are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical value.
