Building History: How WesBanco Arena Began

Planning a New Civic Center in Wheeling

Back in February 1973, people in Wheeling started talking about building a new civic center. By May 1973, an architecture company called Mosser Construction Inc. was chosen to design the arena.

The city council approved the plans for the arena and a nearby parking garage on April 16, 1974. The whole project was expected to cost about $9.6 million. Some residents tried to stop the construction, but the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia allowed the city to move forward. This meant the city could sell bonds to get money for the project.

Construction and Grand Opening Day

Construction on the civic center officially began on September 6, 1975. Around this time, a new architecture firm, Dalton, Dalton, Little & Newport, took over the design work.

The arena was ready to open on April 19, 1977. To celebrate, a famous band called The Doobie Brothers played a concert. Over 6,900 people came to enjoy the show on opening night!

New Name for the Arena: WesBanco Arena

On October 18, 2003, a local bank called WesBanco made a deal. They paid $2.3 million to have the arena named after them for 10 years. This is why it became known as WesBanco Arena.

In August 2013, WesBanco renewed the naming rights for another 10 years. They paid $2.5 million to keep their name on the arena.
