A Look at Wesley Chapel's History

The story of Wesley Chapel began with a church! The Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church was founded in 1832. It was named after John Wesley's famous chapel in London. John Wesley was the founder of Methodism.

The church was built on an old campground near Mineral Springs. In the early 1900s, people living nearby started calling their area "Wesley Chapel." They took the name from the church.

From Price's Mill to Wesley Chapel

Before it was called Wesley Chapel, the village was known as Price's Mill. This name came from the Price family, especially Joseph Price and his son, James Newton Price. The Price family started as farmers. Over time, they owned a lot of land in the area. They helped the village grow a lot in its early days.

James Newton Price was an important person in the community. He served in the North Carolina government for four terms. During this time, he helped start Wesley Chapel High School in 1901. This was the first public high school in a rural area of North Carolina. He was also the first leader of the school board.

The high school burned down in 1955. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1961 as Wesley Chapel Elementary School. This happened after Sun Valley High School opened in Indian Trail. The elementary school also burned down once more but was rebuilt in 1966.

Wesley Chapel officially became a village in Union County in 1998.
