West Range is a small area or "locality" in South Australia, a state in Australia. It's located right on the south-east coast, looking out over a bay called Lacepede Bay. This bay is part of a much bigger ocean area known as the Southern Ocean, or sometimes the Great Australian Bight.

West Range is about 232 kilometers (about 144 miles) south-east of Adelaide city centre, which is the capital city of South Australia. It's also about 145 kilometers (about 90 miles) south of Mount Gambier.

What is West Range?

West Range was officially named in December 1998. The name had been used for a long time by local people. The District Council of Lacepede helped to make it an official place name.

Where is West Range Located?

West Range stretches along the coast. It goes from the northern end of Paranki Lagoon in the north to an area called Blackford Drain in the south. On the eastern side, it reaches West Range Road.

The main road, the Princes Highway, runs through West Range from north to south. It's located between the coastline and a low-lying area that can sometimes flood. This area includes several water bodies, like Paranki Lagoon, Partiari, and Teilaka.

What is the Land Used For?

Most of the land in West Range is used for agriculture, which means growing crops or raising animals.

However, there's also a special strip of land between the coastline and the Princes Highway. This area, along with the entire Paranki Lagoon Conservation Park, is set aside for conservation. This means it's protected to keep its natural environment safe.

How is West Range Governed?

West Range is part of several important government areas:

  • It's in the federal division of Barker. This is the area represented by a member of the Australian Parliament.
  • It's in the state electoral district of MacKillop. This is the area represented by a member of the South Australian Parliament.
  • It's part of the Kingston District Council. This is the local government area that manages services for the community, like roads and rubbish collection.
