Footnotes Location

Coorong is a special place in the Australian state of South Australia. It's famous for a very long, narrow lagoon also called the Coorong. This area stretches along the coast from the Murray Mouth (where the Murray River meets the sea) near Adelaide, all the way down to the town of Kingston SE. It's about 140 kilometers long!

The Coorong area includes many interesting features:

  • Parts of the Murray River system, like Port Pullen and the main Coorong lagoon.
  • Important islands such as Bird Island, Ewe Island, Long Island, Mud Island, and Tauwitchere Island.
  • The entire Younghusband Peninsula, which is a long strip of land.
  • A large area of land (about 267 square kilometers) between the towns of Meningie and Salt Creek.
  • Land located between the Coorong Lagoon and another lagoon called the Paranki Lagoon.

The boundaries for this area were first set in 1998 and then updated in 2000 by local councils. The name "Coorong" comes from the lagoon itself. In 2014, Bird Island, which is near the Murray Mouth, officially became part of the Coorong locality.

The main purpose of this area is protecting nature. Most of the land here is part of the Coorong National Park and the Mud Islands Game Reserve. These parks help keep the natural environment safe for plants and animals.

Coorong is also home to some historic places that are protected by the state. These include Magrath Flat Homestead, Teeluc Cottage, and White Hut Cottage.

The Coorong area is part of different government regions. It's in the federal Division of Barker and the state electoral district of MacKillop. It's also managed by the Kingston District Council and the Coorong District Council.
