Westmont's History

In 2009, a writer for the Los Angeles Times newspaper, Hector Tobar, wrote a story about Westmont. He noted that the community is "officially (but rarely) called Westmont." He also pointed out that it has "no 'mont,' not even a hill." It seems the name came from being west of Vermont Avenue.

The community has faced some challenges over the years. In 2014, a part of Vermont Avenue that Westmont shares with Vermont Vista was mentioned in the newspaper. The article talked about how the area had experienced a lot of violence.
