History of Westmoreland
Westmoreland was planned out in 1871. This means its streets and building lots were officially mapped. The city was named after Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
On April 30, 2024, a strong tornado hit Westmoreland. It was an EF3 tornado. The storm caused one death and three injuries. It also destroyed 22 homes and damaged 13 others.

Rock Creek High School is located between the two towns. Its sports teams are called the Rock Creek Mustangs. Westmoreland Elementary School is in Westmoreland.
Westmoreland High School closed in 1991 when the school districts combined. Its mascot used to be the Westmoreland Wildcats.
