Whigham's History
The city of Whigham was named after Robert Whigham. He was a local merchant, which means he owned a store or traded goods.
In 1896, the government of Georgia officially made Whigham a town. This means it got its own local government. Later, in 1970, it was officially recognized as a city.
Where is Whigham?
Whigham is in the western part of Grady County. You can find it at these coordinates: 30°53′3″N 84°19′30″W / 30.88417°N 84.32500°W.
A main road, U.S. Route 84, goes right through the middle of Whigham. This road is called Broad Avenue in the city. If you go east on this road for about 8 miles (13 km), you'll reach Cairo. Cairo is the main city in Grady County. If you go west for about 15 miles (24 km), you'll get to Bainbridge.
Whigham is also located about halfway between two much larger cities: Memphis, Tennessee, and Miami, Florida.
The city covers a total area of about 1.19 square miles (3.1 square kilometers). A very small part of this area, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.
