The whirligig beetles are a family of special water beetles. They are known for swimming on the surface of fresh water, like ponds and slow-moving streams.

These beetles usually stay on the water's surface if they are not bothered. However, if they feel threatened, they can quickly dive underwater. When they get scared, they often swim very fast in circles.

Amazing Eyes

Whirligig beetles have unique eyes that are split into two parts. This amazing feature allows them to see both above and below the water at the same time! It helps them find food and stay safe from danger.

What They Look Like

There are about 700 different kinds of whirligig beetles living around the world. They belong to 15 main groups, called genera. There are also some types that are only found as fossils.

Most whirligig beetles look quite similar to each other. However, they can be different sizes. They range from just 3 mm (about the size of a small ant) to 18 mm long. That's almost as long as your finger!

These beetles usually have a flat, rounded body shape. Their bodies are very smooth and streamlined. This special shape helps them glide easily through the water. Their legs and other body parts fit tightly against their body, which also helps them swim fast.

How They Live

Both young whirligig beetles, called larvae, and the grown-up beetles are active predators. This means they hunt and eat other smaller creatures.

Adult whirligig beetles carry a bubble of air under their hard wing covers, called elytra. This air bubble lets them stay underwater for a long time if they need to. Most of the time, you will see them moving around together in groups on the water's surface.
