Widdington is a small village located in Essex, England. It is part of the Uttlesford district and is found near the town of Saffron Walden. In 2011, about 504 people lived in Widdington. The village is also close to the M11 motorway, a major road.
Widdington is home to a church called St Mary the Virgin. There is also a very old building known as Prior's Hall. It is now a private home, but it was built a long time ago, around the late 900s or early 1000s! Nearby, you can find Prior's Hall barn, which dates back to the 1300s.
Widdington's History
Widdington has a long history. It was even mentioned in a famous old book called the Domesday Book. This book was created in 1086 by order of William the Conqueror. It helped him understand who owned land and what was in England after he became king.
In the Domesday Book, Widdington was written as Widituna. The record showed that different groups and people owned parts of the village. These included St Valery Abbey, Robert from Robert Gernon, and Ranulf Peverel. This shows that Widdington was an important place even a thousand years ago!
