Wiggiswil is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Bern-Mittelland area of the canton of Bern. Wiggiswil is a quiet place, known for its farming and natural beauty.

History of Wiggiswil

Early Beginnings and Ancient Finds

Wiggiswil was first written about in the year 1219. Back then, its name was Wigersvile. People have lived in this area for a very long time. Scientists have found old tools made of flint stone near the Moossee lake. These tools show that people lived here even before recorded history. Also, objects from the Roman times have been found in the village and at a place called Seerain.

Sharing a Council with Deisswil

For many years, Wiggiswil has worked closely with its nearby village, Deisswil bei Münchenbuchsee. They have always depended on each other. Even today, these two small towns share one town council. This means they make decisions together for both communities. Wiggiswil is also part of the parish of Münchenbuchsee, which is a church district.

Modern Changes and a Famous Hotel

In 1973, a big road called the A6 motorway was built through Wiggiswil. This highway connects the town to larger cities like Bern and Biel/Bienne. Even with the highway, Wiggiswil has mostly stayed a farming community.

The town is home to a very old and famous hotel and restaurant called Moospinte. It has been around for over 150 years! During World War II, a Swiss general named Henri Guisan sometimes used the Moospinte for important secret meetings. Today, the restaurant is still highly rated. The famous Gault Millau guide, which reviews restaurants, gives it a score of 16 out of 20.

Wiggiswil is located on the northwest side of the Moossee lake valley. The total area of Wiggiswil is about 1.4 square kilometers. A large part of this land, about 68.5%, is used for farming. This includes fields for growing crops and pastures for animals.

About 12.6% of the land is covered by forests. The rest of the land is used for buildings and roads (16.8%). A very small part, 0.7%, is made up of rivers or lakes. Another small part, 1.4%, is land that cannot be used for anything.

On December 31, 2009, the old district that Wiggiswil belonged to, called Amtsbezirk Fraubrunnen, was closed. The very next day, January 1, 2010, Wiggiswil became part of a new area. This new area is called Verwaltungskreis Bern-Mittelland.
