Willadingen was first mentioned in official papers way back in 1214. Back then, its name was Willedingen.

The oldest signs of people living here are some stone tools (flints) from the Stone Age (Neolithic period). These were found in the Neumatt area. Later, a grave or graveyard was found in Wigglismoos.

This small village has always been closely connected to Koppigen. It depended on Koppigen for its government, economy, and religion. Even today, Willadingen is part of Koppigen's school and church areas.

This strong connection probably started with Peter of Thorberg. He bought land in Willadingen in 1374. After he passed away in 1397, his land went to the Thorberg Charterhouse, a religious house he helped create.

When the city of Bern became Protestant in 1528, they took over the Charterhouse's land. Willadingen then became part of Bern's Koppigen district.

Willadingen has mostly been a farming village with very little industry. In 2000, most people who worked here traveled to jobs in bigger towns nearby.

Willadingen covers an area of about 2.2 square kilometers (0.85 square miles). A large part of this land, about 68.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 28.2% of the area. The remaining 4.6% is where buildings and roads are located.

Most of the built-up area is made up of houses and other buildings. The rest is for transportation, like roads. All of the forested land is covered with thick forests. For farming, about half the land is used for growing crops, and the rest is for pastures where animals graze.

The village is located along the Ösch river, right on the border with the Canton of Solothurn. Willadingen includes the main village, plus two smaller settlements called hamlets: Mösli and Moosgasse. There's also a newer housing area called Lischmatt.

In 2010, Willadingen became part of a new administrative area called Verwaltungskreis Emmental.
