Willet is a small town located in Cortland County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,043 people lived there. The town gets its name from a person called Colonel Marinus Willet. You can find Willet in the southeast part of Cortland County, a bit southeast of the city of Cortland.

History of Willet

The area where Willet is located was once part of the Central New York Military Tract. People first started settling here around 1797.

The town of Willet was officially created in 1818. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Cincinnatus. By 1865, the population of Willet was 982 people.

Geography of Willet

Willet covers a total area of about 67.5 square kilometers (26.05 square miles). Most of this area, about 66.6 square kilometers (25.73 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.8 square kilometers (0.32 square miles), is water.

The Otselic River flows south through the town.

Willet is in Cortland County. The eastern border of the town is also the border of Chenango County. The southern border of Willet touches Broome County.

Two main roads, New York State Route 26 and New York State Route 41, meet in Willet village. Another road, New York State Route 221, crosses NY-26 and NY-41 just west of the village.
