Willie Harden Gillus was born on September 1, 1963. He is an American former football player and coach. He played as a quarterback in two major leagues: the National Football League (NFL) in the United States and the Canadian Football League (CFL) in Canada. After his playing days, Gillus also coached football at Norfolk State University.
Playing Football
Willie Gillus played college football at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. College football is when students play for their university's team. As a quarterback, Willie was a very important player. The quarterback is the player who leads the team's offense and throws the ball.
He set many passing records for his school's football team. In 1984, he helped the Norfolk State Spartans reach the Division II football playoffs. This was the only time the Spartans made it to the playoffs in that division.
Willie Gillus later joined the Green Bay Packers in the 1987 NFL season. The NFL is the biggest professional football league in the United States. After playing in the NFL, he spent five seasons playing in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Coaching Football
After he stopped playing football, Willie Gillus became a coach. In the late 1990s, he coached high school football in Surry County, Virginia.
Later, he returned to his old university, Norfolk State, to be the head football coach. He coached there for two years, in 2003 and 2004. After that, in 2005, he coached quarterbacks and running backs for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL. Willie Gillus also worked as an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
