Willie Harden Gillus was born on September 1, 1963. He is a former American gridiron football player and coach. Willie played as a quarterback in professional leagues. These included the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). After his playing career, he became a football coach. He even coached at Norfolk State University from 2003 to 2004.
Willie Gillus's Playing Career
Willie Gillus played college football at Norfolk State University. This university is located in Norfolk, Virginia. As a quarterback, he was very good at passing the ball. He set many passing records for the school's football team. In 1984, he led the Norfolk State Spartans to their only appearance in the Division II football playoffs.
After college, Gillus joined the Green Bay Packers. This was during the 1987 NFL season. He then played for five seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was a successful player in both leagues.
Willie Gillus's Coaching Career
After he stopped playing football, Willie Gillus started coaching. In the late 1990s, he coached high school football. This was in Surry County, Virginia.
Later, he became the head football coach at his old college, Norfolk State. He coached there for two years, in 2003 and 2004. After that, in 2005, he coached for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. This team is part of the CFL. He was their quarterbacks and running backs coach for one year. Gillus also worked as an assistant head coach. He was also a quarterbacks coach at Elizabeth City State University. This university is in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
