History of Wilton
Early Beginnings in 1855
Wilton was officially planned and marked out in 1855. This process is called "platting." It means that the streets and plots of land were drawn on a map.
Post Office and County Seat
A post office was opened in Wilton in 1856. This allowed people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It stayed open until 1881.
Wilton also played an important role in the county's early days. It served as the "county seat" from 1857 until 1870. Being the county seat meant that Wilton was the main center for the county's government. Important county offices and courts were located there during that time.
