History of Winchester
Winchester was officially planned and started in 1857. It was named after Winchester, Virginia, a city far away.
A post office opened in Winchester in March 1858. It served the community for many years before closing in 2021. The county hospital in Winchester was built in February 1956.

Winchester is found at coordinates 39.321658 degrees North and -95.268142 degrees West. The city covers a total area of about 0.36 square miles (0.93 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 0.35 square miles (0.90 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.

Jefferson County North High School is located right in Winchester. The sports teams for Jefferson County North High School are called the Chargers. Before the schools combined, Winchester had its own high school. Its mascot was the Winchester Eagles.
