History of Nortonville
Nortonville was first planned out, or platted, in 1873. It was named after L. Norton, Jr., who worked for the railroad. The city's first post office opened its doors in May 1873.
In the early 1900s, Nortonville was known as a 'sundown town'. This meant that African Americans were not allowed to live there, especially after sunset. This was a sad part of history in some places.

Nortonville is located at 39°25′3″N 95°19′54″W / 39.41750°N 95.33167°W. This means it's in the northeastern part of Kansas.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of about 0.45 square miles (1.15 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 0.44 square miles (1.12 square kilometers), is land. A very small part, 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.

Education in Nortonville
The public schools in Nortonville are part of the Jefferson County North USD 339 school district. This district was formed when the schools in Nortonville and Winchester joined together.
The high school for the district is Jefferson County North High School. Its mascot is the Jefferson County Chargers. The elementary and middle schools are located right in Nortonville.
Nortonville used to have its own high school, called Nortonville High School. Its mascot was the Cardinals. But this school closed when the districts combined.
