Wing Wah (Chinese: 榮華) is a very famous company from Hong Kong. It runs many restaurants and also makes delicious food. The company is officially called Wing Wah Food Manufactory Limited (榮華食品製造業有限公司).
Wing Wah is best known for its amazing mooncakes. But they also make other tasty treats. These include Chinese sausage, different kinds of cakes, and various teas.
The Story of Wing Wah
Wing Wah started a long time ago, in 1950. It was founded by two people, Lau Pui Ling and Chiu Lut-sau. Their first business was a restaurant in a four-story building in Yuen Long. This building also had a shop that sold their special mooncakes.
The company grew steadily. In 1962, it became an official limited company. A year later, in 1963, Wing Wah introduced a new type of mooncake. This one was made with white lotus paste, which became very popular.
Wing Wah continued to open more places. A new branch opened in Wanchai in 1967. Then, in 1975, a much bigger restaurant opened in Yuen Long.
How Wing Wah Grew
Over the years, the retail part of the business got much bigger. Wing Wah opened shops all over Hong Kong. These shops sold not just mooncakes, but also Chinese sausage, cakes, and teas.
In the 1990s, the company built its own special building. It was called the Wing Wah Centre and was in their home area of Yuen Long. They also opened shops in busy places. This included the Hong Kong International Airport. They even opened a tea museum at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island.
Making and Selling Products
In the 1960s, Wing Wah focused a lot on its bakery. They became a limited company to help manage their growth. They also built a manufacturing plant in Hong Kong. This plant used special machines to make sure all their products were top quality.
Expanding Around the World
During the 1970s, Wing Wah opened its own shops in many different places. You could find them on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon, and in the New Territories. This helped them reach more customers.
At this time, Wing Wah also started selling its products internationally. Their mooncakes became available in over 100 big cities. These cities were in mainland China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries in Southeast Asia.
In the 1980s, Wing Wah started to focus even more on the China market. Today, Wing Wah mooncakes are sold in many distant places. This includes Inner Mongolia and Harbin.
In the late 1990s, Wing Wah was the first Chinese cake shop to open stores at the Hong Kong International Airport. This made it easy for travelers to buy their famous treats.
