How Winston Became a City
In 1920, a road called Oregon Route 99 was finished. This road connected Winston directly with the nearby town of Dillard. Before this road, the Umpqua River made it hard to travel between the two places.
The city was officially started in 1953. At first, it was called "Coos Junction." Gene Geyer was the first City Recorder, which is like a city secretary. The next year, Paul Bender became the first mayor of Coos Junction. In 1955, the city approved new rules for how it would be run, and its name was officially changed to Winston.
Wildlife Safari and Its Famous Cheetah
The Wildlife Safari opened its doors in Winston in 1972. This park is a big reason why many people know about Winston. In 1986, a special bronze statue was placed in the middle of town. This statue remembers a cheetah from the safari named Khayam, who was very special to the park.
