Winter Beach is a community in Indian River County, Florida, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area that the government counts for population, but it is not an official city.
In 2020, about 3,136 people lived in Winter Beach. The number of people living here has grown a lot. In 2000, there were only 965 residents. Winter Beach is part of a larger area that includes the towns of Sebastian and Vero Beach.

Where is Winter Beach Located?
Winter Beach is in the eastern part of Indian River County. It is located at 27°43′N 80°25′W / 27.717°N 80.417°W. To the north, you will find Wabasso. To the south is Gifford.
East of Winter Beach is Indian River, a body of water. Across this water is Indian River Shores. This town is on Orchid Island.
U.S. Route 1 is a main road that goes through Winter Beach. If you go north on this road, it's about 7 miles to Sebastian. If you go south, it's about 6 miles to Vero Beach. Vero Beach is the main town, or county seat, of the county.
The total area of Winter Beach is about 6.9 square miles (17.9 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.22%, is water.
A Brief History of Winter Beach
Winter Beach has had a few different names over the years. It was first started in the late 1890s. Back then, it was known as the town of Woodley.
How Winter Beach Got Its Name
In 1902, the community changed its name to Quay. This was to honor Senator Matthew S. Quay. He was a senator from Pennsylvania. Senator Quay had suggested a bill to make the Intracoastal Waterway wider and deeper. The people in the community thought this would help them. Senator Quay also spent his winters in St. Lucie Village, which is nearby.
Then, in 1922, the community changed its name again. They called it Winter Beach. This new name was for advertising. The idea was to show that it was a sunny place. Their slogan was "Where the Sunshine Spends the Winter."
Becoming a County Seat
In 1925, Indian River County was created. Winter Beach almost became the county seat. But the town of Vero, now called Vero Beach, became an official city. Vero Beach was then chosen as the county seat instead. Even in 1940, some parts of Winter Beach were still called Quay in official records.
