Winthrop Harbor is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States. It's known as the "Cornerstone of Illinois." In 2020, about 6,705 people lived there.
This village is located right on the northern edge of Illinois. It is also part of the big Chicago area. Winthrop Harbor is famous for its North Point Marina. This marina is so large it can hold over 1,500 boats! It's actually the biggest marina on the entire Great Lakes.
The National Weather Service uses Winthrop Harbor as a special point to warn boats about weather on Lake Michigan. Every summer, almost a million visitors come to enjoy the marina, its beaches, and other fun places.

Police Department
The Winthrop Harbor Police Department has full-time officers. They also have part-time officers who help with patrols and other special tasks. The current police chief is Anthony Velardi.
Fire Department
The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department started in 1949. It used to be a small group of volunteers. Now, it operates 24 hours a day, every day of the week.
Part-time employees work in shifts to make sure there's always a crew ready. Other firefighters who are off-duty also respond from home when needed. They use two fire engines, a 75-foot ladder truck, two ambulances for medical emergencies, a brush unit, a rescue boat, and a command car. The village also has agreements with nearby towns to get extra help in emergencies. The current Fire Chief is Rocco Campanella.

Most of the schools in Winthrop Harbor are part of the Winthrop Harbor School District 1. A small part of the village is in the Beach Park Community Consolidated School District 3. All high school students in Winthrop Harbor attend schools in the Zion-Benton Township High School District 126.
Water Quality Concerns
Sometimes, the water quality at Winthrop Harbor's North Point Marina has been a concern.
- In 2009, a study by Forbes.com said that North Point Marina was the seventh most polluted beach in the United States. This was based on water samples taken in 2008.
- The marina had been on this list since 2005. Tests showed that the water had too many contaminants in 61% of the samples.
- In 2006, a test at the local beach found that it was one of the most polluted beaches on the Great Lakes. It had unhealthy water in 89% of the tests.
