Wirrulla is a small town in the Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia. It is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Streaky Bay. The town is known for its role in the "grain belt," which means it's a key area for growing crops like wheat.
Wirrulla has many large silos. These are tall structures used to store grain harvested from nearby farms. The name Wirrulla comes from an Aboriginal word that means "to make haste" or "to be quick."
About Wirrulla
Wirrulla is a small community. In August 2016, a count of people (called a census) showed that 104 people lived there.
How Wirrulla Started
The town of Wirrulla began to grow in 1914. This happened after a large piece of land, called The Wirrilla Estate, was divided into smaller parts. The town developed around a railway siding, which is a short track next to a main railway line where trains can stop or be stored.
Wirrulla has always been a helpful stop for people traveling to the Gawler Ranges. These ranges are a group of hills located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the town.
What You Can Find in Wirrulla
Even though it's a small town, Wirrulla has some useful places. You can find a hotel, a caravan park (for people traveling with caravans or RVs), and a general store.
Wirrulla also has a very unusual sight: an inland jetty. A jetty is usually a pier that goes out into the sea or a lake. This one is on land, which makes it quite rare!
Sports and Fun
The town offers several ways to have fun and play sports. There are facilities for playing bowls, which is a game similar to bocce. Wirrulla also has a golf course for those who enjoy golf.
The local Australian rules football team, the Wirrulla Football Club, joined a new league in March 2021. They are now part of the Western Eyre Football League. This happened after their old league, the Mid West Football League, closed down.
