Wiscoy Creek is a cool stream in western New York. It is about 15 miles (24 km) long. This creek is a tributary of the Genesee River. A tributary is a smaller stream that flows into a larger river.
Native Americans used to call Wiscoy Creek O-wa-is-ki. This name means "under the banks."
Where Wiscoy Creek Flows
Wiscoy Creek starts in the Town of Eagle in Wyoming County. As it flows, another stream joins it. This stream is called the North Branch Wiscoy Creek. It comes from the Town of Wethersfield. They meet in the Hamlet of Bliss.
From there, Wiscoy Creek flows southeast. It passes through the Village of Pike. Then, another creek called East Koy Creek joins it. Soon after, Wiscoy Creek flows into the Genesee River. This happens in the Town of Hume in Allegany County.
Fishing for Trout
Wiscoy Creek is a great place for fishing, especially for trout! Cold springs feed the creek, keeping its water cool. The water temperature rarely goes above 70°F (21°C). This cool water helps trout live and grow all year long.
Most of the trout in Wiscoy Creek are wild trout. This means they are born and grow naturally in the stream. Only a small part of the creek, about 1 mile (1.6 km) in Allegany County, gets new fish added by people.
In 2006, a study found many wild brown trout in the creek. There were about 1,600 adult brown trout for every mile of the stream in Wyoming County. Usually, the trout here are not super big because there are so many of them. But one time, a 19-inch (48 cm) fish was found during the study!
It is easy for people to get to the creek for fishing. There are over 12 miles (20 km) of public fishing areas. There are also 12 footpaths and three parking spots for anglers. Some other areas can be used if landowners say it's okay.
