Woodbine is a suburb located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is about 55 kilometres (34 miles) south-west of the main city area of Sydney. Woodbine is part of the City of Campbelltown local government area. It is also part of the wider Macarthur region and shares the postcode 2560 with Campbelltown.

Woodbine has a rich history, starting long before European settlers arrived. The suburb's name has an interesting story behind it.

How Did Woodbine Get Its Name?

The name Woodbine officially comes from an old cottage. This cottage was home to the Payten family from the 1870s to the 1960s. The cottage was on a hill now called Payten Reserve.

There's also a funny story about how the name was chosen. During a meeting, a councillor joked about naming the suburb after cigarettes. This off-the-cuff remark led to serious thought about the name Woodbine. The suburb was almost named Kiddlea, after a local politician named John Kidd. However, many councillors did not like this idea. When the Woodbine Cottage was mentioned, the name was changed to Woodbine.

First People of Woodbine

For over 30,000 years, the land where Woodbine now stands belonged to the Tharawal people. They are the traditional owners of this area. You can still find signs of their ancient lives here. These include rock engravings, cave paintings, and places where they sharpened their axes. There are also shell middens, which are old piles of shells left from their meals.

A local park, Kanbyugal Reserve, is named after a Tharawal leader. This leader met with explorer George Caley in the early 1800s.

European Settlement and Growth

British settlers started moving into the Woodbine area in the early 1800s. They set up farms and planted orchards. Rose Payten, a famous local sports star, lived in the Woodbine cottage. She passed away in 1951, and her old cottage was taken down in the 1960s.

As Sydney grew, the Woodbine area started to develop in the 1970s. In 1981, Australia's first underground display home was built here. It was located in Ettalong Place.
