History of Eagle Vale
How Eagle Vale Got Its Name
After European settlers arrived in Australia, many new towns were created south-west of Sydney. These towns helped provide food for the growing colony. Land was given to settlers to start farms. One such piece of land, 100 acres (about 0.4 square kilometres), was given to Thomas Clarkson.
Clarkson was a former convict who became a successful businessman. He started a property called 'Woodland Grove'. This property covered what is now Eagle Vale and many nearby suburbs.
After Clarkson passed away in 1826, the land was sold to Jemima Jenkins. She was a wealthy widow. She renamed the property 'Eagle Farm' and used the address 'Eagle Farm, Eagle Vale'. The name Eagle Vale came from two creeks that flowed through the property: Eagle Creek and Valebrook. Valebrook Creek is now in the suburb of Eschol Park.
Changes to the Land and Name
Jemima Jenkins later sold a large part of her property to the Kearns family. They used it to make their own property, 'Epping Forest', bigger. After Jenkins died, the land eventually went to William Fowler, a businessman from Campbelltown.
Fowler renamed the property 'Eschol Park'. For a while, the name Eagle Vale was not used.
Eagle Vale Reappears
The name Eagle Vale came back in 1976. This happened when a property called Highlands was being divided into smaller blocks for houses. The new area was named Eagle Vale. It was located between the new suburb of Eschol Park and the public housing area of Claymore.
In 1978, the first housing blocks were sold. More land was released in the 1980s and early 1990s. The land was not too expensive, which attracted many young families buying their first homes.
Some streets on the eastern side of Eagle Vale have names like those in Claymore, such as Albert Namatjira. These streets are named after famous Australian artists. Other streets in Eagle Vale are named after minerals and gemstones, like Emerald, Cameo, and Aquamarine.
Parks and Green Spaces
Eagle Vale has several parks and reserves. One is Thomas Clarkson Reserve, which is where Eagle Creek used to flow. It still has an ornamental pond from the old Jenkins estate.
Nearby suburbs also have parks named after important historical figures. These include Jemima Jenkins (in Kearns) and William Fowler (in Eschol Park). Valebrook Reserve is located where Valebrook Creek once was.
