Woodsfield is a village in Monroe County, Ohio, United States located 30 miles northeast of Marietta. The population was 2,384 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County and houses the Monroe County Courthouse.

History

Woodsfield was founded in 1813 as seat of the newly formed Monroe County. It was named for Archibald Woods. The village was incorporated in 1835.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.02 square miles (5.23 km2), all land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,384 people, 1,054 households, and 617 families living in the village. The population density was 1,180.2 inhabitants per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 1,248 housing units at an average density of 617.8 per square mile (238.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.

There were 1,054 households, of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.5% were non-families. 37.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.81.

The median age in the village was 45.9 years. 21.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.2% were from 25 to 44; 24.9% were from 45 to 64; and 26.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 45.5% male and 54.5% female.

Recent economic trouble

An Ormet Corporation employee strike affected Woodsfield's economic base in 2004, but once the strike ended, things began to improve. When the plant in nearby Hannibal was closed in 2006, another blow was dealt to local employees and economy. That facility reopened by the end of 2006, although it no longer employs as large a staff as when it closed.

Education

The schools in Woodsfield are part of the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. It is the largest school district by land area in the state of Ohio. The schools are:

  • Woodsfield Elementary School - kindergarten through 8th grade
  • Monroe Central High School - 9th through 12th (created by the merger of Skyvue High School and Woodsfield High School)
  • Beallsville Elementary and Beallsville High School
  • Powhatan Elementary and Powhatan High School
  • River Elementary and River High School
  • Swiss Hills Career Center - vocational school, 11th and 12th graders

There is also a private Catholic grade school in Woodsfield.

  • St. Sylvester's Central Elementary School - Preschool - 8th grade

Woodsfield has a public lending library, the Monroe County District Library.

Belmont College's Monroe County Center is located in Woodsfield.
