The Fédération Mondiale du Jeu de Dames (FMJD), also known as the World Draughts Federation, is the main group that connects all the national draughts (or checkers) organizations around the world. It was started in 1947 by four countries: France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland.

What is the FMJD?

The FMJD helps organize and promote the game of draughts globally. It makes sure the rules are the same everywhere. This helps players from different countries compete fairly.

Members of the FMJD

As of 2021, the FMJD has more than 70 national groups as members. These groups represent countries from all over the world. The FMJD is working to get draughts recognized as an Olympic sport. This would be a big step for mind sports like draughts.

The FMJD is also a member of these important sports groups:

  • General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF)
  • International Mind Sports Association (IMSA)

Leaders of the FMJD

Many people have led the FMJD over the years. Here is a list of the presidents:

Types of Draughts Games

The FMJD supports different versions of the game. These are called "disciplines." They include:

  • International draughts (played on a 100-square board)
  • 64-square games like Russian Draughts and Brazilian Draughts
  • Checkers (also known as English draughts)
  • Turkish Draughts

World Championships

The FMJD helps organize big tournaments where the best players from around the world compete. These are called World Championships.

  • World Checkers/Draughts Championship (for English draughts, since 1840)
  • Draughts World Championship (for international draughts, since 1885)
  • Women's World Draughts Championship (for international draughts, since 1973)
  • Draughts-64 World Championships (since 1985)
  • World Youth Draughts Championships (for young players, since 1972)

Regional Championships

Besides world events, there are also championships for different parts of the world. These help players compete closer to home.

  • African Draughts Championships (since 1980)
  • Asian Draughts Championships (since 1999)
  • European Draughts Championships (since 1965)
  • Panamerican Draughts Championship (for North and South America, since 1980)

Regional Groups

The FMJD works with smaller groups that manage draughts in specific regions. These are called confederations.

  • African Draughts Confederation (CAJD)
  • Asian Draughts Confederation (has 26 member groups as of 2018)
  • European Draughts Confederation
  • Pan American Draughts Confederation
