Wright is a small town located in Schoharie County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,516 people lived here. The town was named after Silas Wright, who was a governor.

The Town of Wright is found in the northeastern part of Schoharie County. It is located to the west of the city of Albany.

Discovering Wright's Past

The history of Wright, New York, goes back to the early 1700s. The first families started settling here in 1735. One of the first settlers was the Jacob Becker family.

The Historic Becker House

In 1772, Johannus Becker built a stone house. This house is still standing today. It is an important historical site because of an event that happened on July 26, 1782. During the American Revolutionary War, the Becker family successfully defended their home from an attack.

  • Echo Pond – This is a small lake located in the northeastern part of Wright.
  • Fox Creek – A stream that flows out of the eastern side of the town.
  • Gallupville – This is a small community, or hamlet, in the southwestern part of Wright. It is where Route 146 and Route 443 meet. Gallupville was also the site of the very first settlement in the town. The Gallupville Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gallupville Methodist Church, and Gallupville House are all important historic buildings here.
  • Shutter Corners – Another hamlet located northwest of Gallupville, along Route 443. Shutter Corners is also found along the Fox Creek. It is known for a cave called the Schoharie Cavern.
