Wyndford is a neighborhood in the big city of Glasgow, Scotland. It's about two miles (3.2 km) northwest of the city center, in an area called Maryhill. Wyndford is bordered by Maryhill Road to the north and the River Kelvin to the south. Most of the homes here are part of a housing community that was built in the 1960s and 1970s. These homes are now either owned by families or managed by a group called Cube housing association. The people living here have a group called the Wyndford Tenants Union to help represent them.
A Look Back in Time
Wyndford is built on the land where the old Glasgow city army barracks used to be. That's why many local people still call the area "the Barracks." These barracks were built in 1872. This happened when the main Glasgow army base moved from the east side of the city to this spot. At that time, Maryhill was not officially part of Glasgow; it was its own independent town, called a burgh.
The barracks were home to a famous army group called the Highland Light Infantry. They were a well-known Scottish regiment. The barracks closed in 1960. After that, the land was chosen to build the Wyndford housing scheme. In Glasgow, a "housing scheme" is another name for a housing estate or community.
Some parts of the old barracks are still here today. The original walls and the gatehouse still stand. They form a border around the Wyndford housing area. There's also a nearby place called Walcheren Barracks. It keeps a small connection to the army in the area.
Famous Faces from Wyndford
Wyndford has been home to some well-known people. Two famous footballers grew up in this area. They are Charlie Nicholas and Jim Duffy.
Community Spirit
The people of Wyndford are known for their strong community spirit. For example, the area showed a lot of support during the Glasgow school closures protest, 2009. This was a time when many people in Glasgow spoke up about schools closing in their neighborhoods.
