Wynton Allen Bernard (born September 24, 1990) is an American professional baseball player. He plays as an outfielder for the Leones de Yucatán team in the Mexican League. Wynton also played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Colorado Rockies.
Wynton's Early Baseball Days
Wynton Bernard went to Rancho Bernardo High School in Poway, California. He earned a sports scholarship to attend Niagara University. There, he played college baseball for the Niagara Purple Eagles.
College Baseball Journey
As a freshman, Wynton had a .293 batting average. He also led his team in stolen bases. After his first year, he moved to Riverside Community College. This was to be closer to his family because his father had a stroke.
After his second year, Wynton's father passed away. He then returned to Niagara University for his junior year. During his time at Niagara, from 2009 to 2012, he had a .279 batting average. He also stole 72 bases in 140 games.
Wynton's Professional Baseball Career
Wynton Bernard started his professional baseball journey in 2012. He was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the 35th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft.
Playing for the San Diego Padres
Wynton began his professional career with the Arizona League Padres. He hit .232 in 23 games. In 2013, he played for several teams. These included the Eugene Emeralds, Fort Wayne TinCaps, and Lake Elsinore Storm. In 51 games, he had a .251 batting average. He also hit 1 home run and stole 10 bases. The Padres released him in January 2014.
Time with the Detroit Tigers
In March 2014, Wynton signed with the Detroit Tigers. He played for the West Michigan Whitecaps. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the Midwest League. He hit .324 with 6 home runs and 45 stolen bases. He also set a new team record with 164 hits in a single season.
The Tigers added Wynton to their 40-man roster in October 2014. This was to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. In 2015, he played for the Double-A Erie SeaWolves. He batted .302 with 4 home runs and 43 stolen bases.
In 2016, Wynton played for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. He was later sent to Double-A. In 104 games, he hit .279 with a career-high 7 home runs. He became a free agent in November 2016.
Adventures with Other Teams
- San Francisco Giants: In November 2016, Wynton signed with the San Francisco Giants. He played for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats. He hit .254 with 2 home runs and 13 stolen bases in 82 games. He became a free agent in November 2017.
- Chicago Cubs: In January 2018, Wynton signed with the Chicago Cubs. He played for the Tennessee Smokies and Iowa Cubs. In 98 games, he hit .242 with 3 home runs and 25 stolen bases. He re-signed with the Cubs in November 2018. He played 52 games in 2019 before being released in July.
Independent League Baseball
After leaving the Cubs, Wynton joined the Sugar Land Skeeters in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. This is an independent league, meaning it's not part of Major League Baseball. In 61 games, he hit .314 with 6 home runs and 32 stolen bases. He re-signed with the Skeeters for 2020.
The 2020 Atlantic League season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wynton then played for the Skeeters in the Constellation Energy League. In 23 games, he hit .270 with 2 home runs and 6 stolen bases.
Making it to Major League Baseball
In January 2021, Wynton signed with the Colorado Rockies. He played for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. In 100 games, he hit .254 with 7 home runs and 23 stolen bases. He re-signed with the Rockies in February 2022.
In 2022, he had an amazing season with the Isotopes. He hit .333 with career-highs of 21 home runs and 92 RBI (Runs Batted In). He also stole 30 bases.
MLB Debut with the Rockies
On August 11, 2022, it was announced that Wynton would be promoted to the major leagues for the first time! The next day, he officially joined the active roster. He made his MLB debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In that game, he got a hit, stole a base, and scored a run. He became the oldest player since 1907 to get a hit and a stolen base in his first MLB game.
In 12 major league games for Colorado, Wynton hit .286. He had no home runs, 3 RBI, and 3 stolen bases. In November 2022, he became a free agent.
More Teams and International Play
- Toronto Blue Jays: In January 2023, Wynton signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. He played 60 games for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He hit .271 with 3 home runs and 15 stolen bases. He was released in June 2023.
- Colorado Rockies (Second Time): In June 2023, Wynton signed again with the Colorado Rockies. He played 66 games for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. He hit .329 with 8 home runs and 26 stolen bases. He became a free agent in November 2023.
- Chicago White Sox: In November 2023, Wynton signed with the Chicago White Sox. He played 41 games for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. He batted .306 with three home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was released in July 2024.
- Minnesota Twins: In July 2024, Wynton signed with the Minnesota Twins. He played 32 games for the Triple-A St. Paul Saints. He hit .248 with two home runs and 12 stolen bases. He was released in August 2024.
- Leones de Yucatán: In March 2025, Wynton signed with the Leones de Yucatán of the Mexican League, where he plays now.

Besides playing for teams in the United States, Wynton Bernard has also played professional baseball in other countries. He has played in Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Australia.
Wynton's Family Life
Wynton Bernard has two older brothers who are also athletes. His brother Walter played college football for the New Mexico Lobos. He also played in the National Football League. His other brother, Wayne, played professional basketball in Europe.
In 2011, Wynton appeared on the TV game show Family Feud with his brother Walter.
