Starting at Red Bull Salzburg

Xaver Schlager began his football journey at a young age. After playing for a local youth team, SC St. Valentin, he joined the FC Red Bull Salzburg Academy in 2011. He played for all the different age groups there.

In 2015, Schlager moved to FC Liefering, which is a team connected to FC Red Bull Salzburg. It helps young players get ready for the main team.

During the 2017–18 season, Salzburg had a very successful time in Europe. They finished first in their Europa League group. They then beat strong teams like Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund. This helped them reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League for the first time ever. On May 3, 2018, he played in the semi-final match. However, Marseille won the game and went to the final.

Moving to VfL Wolfsburg

On June 26, 2019, Schlager signed with VfL Wolfsburg, another club in Germany's top league, the Bundesliga. While playing for Wolfsburg, Schlager appeared in 81 matches across all competitions. This included 69 games in the Bundesliga.

Playing for RB Leipzig

On June 17, 2022, Schlager joined RB Leipzig, which is also a Bundesliga club. Leipzig signed him after using a special part of his contract with Wolfsburg. He signed a contract that will keep him with Leipzig until 2026.

Schlager helped Leipzig win two important trophies in 2023. They won the German Cup and the German Super Cup. He started the German Super Cup final and came on as a substitute in the German Cup final.

In May 2024, Schlager got injured during a game against Hoffenheim. Tests showed that he had torn a ligament in his knee. He had surgery and unfortunately missed the European Championship that summer.
