Henry went to Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In October 2008, he broke his cheekbone in a car accident. This made him miss the start of his senior year. On March 14, 2009, he led his team to win the Oklahoma Class 6A state championship. He scored 24 points in that final game.
Henry was chosen for the 2009 McDonald's All-American Boys Game in 2009. He scored 14 points in that game. He also played in the 2009 Nike Hoop Summit and the Jordan Brand Classic. In the Nike Hoop Summit, he led Team USA with 22 points.
Choosing a College Team
After high school, Xavier Henry was a top basketball player. Many colleges wanted him to play for them. He was ranked as one of the best shooting guards in his class.
He first decided to play for the University of Memphis. He wanted to play with his brother, C. J., there. But the coach, John Calipari, left Memphis for the University of Kentucky. This made Henry think about his choice again.
On April 23, 2009, Henry announced he would play for Kansas. He said he always wanted to go to Kansas because his family had played there.
I grew up always wanting to go to Kansas. I switched to Memphis because my brother was going there.
Now, with coach (John Calipari) leaving (for Kentucky), we've decided to go to KU. I'm really excited. That's where my whole family played.
College Basketball Career

In his very first college game, Henry scored 27 points. This was a new record for a freshman player at Kansas. On December 12, 2009, he scored 31 points against La Salle. He was the first Kansas freshman since Paul Pierce to score 30 points in a game. His 31 points were close to the freshman record set by Danny Manning.
