Bertha Xóchitl Gálvez Ruiz (born 22 February 1963) is a Mexican politician and businesswoman. She served as the mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, a borough in Mexico City, from 2015 to 2018. Later, from 2018 to 2023, she was a senator in the Mexican Congress. As a senator, Gálvez was part of the National Action Party. She often supported policies that help people and communities, like those about social spending. She studied computer engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 2023, she was chosen to run for president in the 2024 Mexican presidential election for the Fuerza y Corazón por México group.

Early Life and Education

Xóchitl Gálvez was born on 22 February 1963, in Tepatepec, Hidalgo, Mexico. Her father was from the Otomi Indigenous group, and her mother was mestiza, also with some Otomi family history. When she was a child, she says she sold desserts at the local market. This helped her family and paid for her schooling.

At 16, she moved to Mexico City to study computer engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She worked at a call center and later as a research assistant at UNAM. She earned her degree in Computer Engineering in 2010. During her studies, she also worked as a programmer and systems analyst at the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI). She was also a director of telecommunications at the Mexico City World Trade Center.

From 2000 to 2006, she led the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples. This was during the time Vicente Fox was president. In 2010, she ran for governor of the state of Hidalgo. She came in second place, getting 47% of the votes.

Businesses and Community Work

In 1992, Xóchitl Gálvez started a company called High Tech Services. This company created technology projects for smart buildings. These projects focused on saving energy, automating tasks, and improving security and communication. She also founded and was the CEO of OMEI, a company that managed smart buildings.

She has received several awards for her work. These include the Sé Líder Foundation award and the Zazil award for social and humanitarian efforts. She also received the "Commitment to Others" recognition and the "Pericles Medal" for her social contributions.

In 1999, the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, named her one of the "100 Global Leaders of the World's Future." In 2000, Business Week magazine listed her as one of Latin America's top new business leaders. With money from her companies, she started the Porvenir Foundation in 1995. This foundation works to fight child malnutrition and help women in Indigenous areas.

Political Career

Mayor of Miguel Hidalgo

In 2015, Gálvez ran for mayor of the Miguel Hidalgo borough in Mexico City. She was the candidate for the National Action Party. She won the election with 32% of the votes. She served as mayor from 1 October 2015, to 15 March 2018.

Senator of the Republic

In the 2018 federal elections, Gálvez ran for a Senate seat for Mexico City. She was part of the "Por México al Frente" group. She did not win the Mexico City seat directly. However, she was elected to the Senate through a system called proportional representation. She served as a senator from 1 September 2018, to 20 November 2023. During this time, she was a member of the National Action Party.

In April 2021, Gálvez considered joining the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). This was to help the PRD have enough members to be a recognized group in the Senate. In the end, the PRD was allowed to be part of the Senate's committee without her switching parties.

2024 Presidential Campaign

In mid-2023, major political groups in Mexico began choosing their candidates for the 2024 presidential election. Xóchitl Gálvez first thought about running for mayor of Mexico City. However, in late June 2023, she announced her plan to run for president in the 2024 general election. She quickly became a popular choice among the opposition candidates.

This led to discussions and accusations from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He often mentioned her in his morning press conferences. He also shared private information about her companies' tax records. Because of these actions, the National Electoral Institute (INE) told López Obrador to stop talking about the 2024 elections. Gálvez sought legal protection against his actions, but this protection was not put into effect. On 30 August 2023, she was confirmed as the presidential candidate for the "Broad Front for Mexico" group.
