Yael Naim (Hebrew: יעל נעים) was born on February 6, 1978. She is a singer and actress from France and Israel. She became very famous in 2008 in the United States. This happened after her popular song "New Soul" was used in a TV ad for Apple's MacBook Air computer. The song became a big hit, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. In 2013, the French government honored her. They made her a knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, which is a special award for artists.

Life and Music Career

Yael Naim was born in Paris, France. Her parents were from Tunisia. When she was four years old, her family moved to Ramat HaSharon, Israel. She grew up there. Later, she sang as a soloist in the Israeli Air Force Orchestra.

Yael started her music career by acting in a musical called Les Dix Commandements. Her first solo album, In a Man's Womb, came out in 2001. She also sang a song for the movie Harrison's Flowers. At the beginning of her career, she was known simply as Yael. She also sang a popular version of the Britney Spears song "Toxic".

Yael Naim later teamed up with a musician named David Donatien [fr]. For two years, they worked together on thirteen of Yael's songs. They recorded these songs in a studio in her apartment in Paris. Their second album, called Yael Naim, was released in 2007. The songs on this album are in French, English, and Hebrew. Critics really liked the album. It quickly reached number 11 on the French album charts. Her music style is a mix of folk and jazz. She sings with a soft and sometimes husky voice.

In 2008, Apple chose her song "New Soul" for their first TV commercial for the MacBook Air laptop. Even Steve Jobs, who created Apple, picked the song himself. Because many people bought the song online in the U.S., it became a top ten hit. "New Soul" reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This made Yael Naim the first Israeli solo artist to have a top ten song in the United States. The song was also used in the movies The House Bunny and Wild Target. Yael's third album was released in 2010. The first song from that album was "Go to the River".

In 2016, Yael Naim won her second Female Artist of the Year award. This award is from the Victoires de la Musique, which is like the Grammy Awards in France. She had won the same award before in 2011.
