History of Yarrah
The land where Yarrah is located has a long history. The original people of this area are the Barngarla people. They have lived here for thousands of years. The name 'Yarrah' comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "river red gum," which is a type of tree.
Early Days and Growth
In April 1863, a small town was planned in Yarrah. It was set up along the railway line. Land was offered for sale in July 1864, but not many people bought it. Later, in December 1880, the area was officially named the hundred of Yarrah by Governor William Jervois.
A Post Office opened in Yarrah in October 1887. It closed around 1909. Yarrah Primary School started in 1893. It closed for a short time around 1919 because not many students were attending. It then reopened but closed permanently later on.
Railways and Water
The Wilkatana railway station was located in the western part of Yarrah. It was named after a nearby place called Wilkatana Station. Another railway station, Depot Creek, was also in Yarrah for many years. Even though the station is now closed, the railway line is still used today.
The historic Depot Creek Weir is a special structure in Yarrah. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. A weir is like a small dam built across a river. This weir was built between 1912 and 1917. It was part of a big project to supply water for the Trans-Australian Railway. This railway connects Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie. Long before the weir, explorer Edward John Eyre used the natural springs in this area for water.
Modern Boundaries and Postcodes
The official boundaries for the locality of Yarrah were set in November 1999. These boundaries mostly match the old hundred of Yarrah. In April 2013, more land was added to the locality.
In 2013, Australia Post changed the local postcode for Yarrah. It changed from 5713 to 5433. This was part of a review of postcodes in outback areas.
