Becoming a Martial Arts Star

Training and Teaching

Yayan Ruhian trained with a group that later became known as Pencak Silat Tenaga Dasar. He became a trainer and even a referee. This meant he could not compete in tournaments himself. By the mid-2000s, Yayan Ruhian was teaching pencak silat in many countries. These included Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. He also learned other martial arts, like aikido. He even worked as a hand-to-hand combat instructor for the Indonesian National Police.

First Steps in Movies

In 2008, a filmmaker named Gareth Evans asked Yayan Ruhian for help. He wanted Yayan to choreograph the fight scenes for his movie Merantau. Yayan also tried out for a role in the film. He got the part of Eric, a small but powerful martial artist. Merantau was released in 2009. After the movie, many people wanted to learn silat from him.

Many critics praised Yayan's performance as Mad Dog.

After this movie, Yayan's image and a word his character used, gereget, became popular online. People made many funny pictures and memes with them. Yayan Ruhian said he did not mind the memes. He felt it meant people had watched and enjoyed the movie.

Prakoso in The Raid 2

In 2014, Yayan Ruhian appeared in The Raid 2. He played a new character named Prakoso. Prakoso was an assassin and a trusted helper for a mafia boss. The director wanted to show that Prakoso was different from Mad Dog. Prakoso was an older character, a father and husband who had faced challenges, but he was very loyal.
