Her Life and Work
Yeşim Ağaoğlu was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on January 21, 1966. She studied at the University of Istanbul, learning about old buildings and art history. She also earned a master's degree in communications, focusing on radio, TV, and movies. She took some film classes in New York, where she made a short film called Loneliness, Machines And Meditation.
Yeşim started publishing her poems in literary magazines when she was 18. She has published seven poetry books in Turkey and two in Azerbaijan. Her poems have been translated into many languages, including Azeri, Russian, English, Italian, and Spanish. She is a member of International PEN, a group that supports writers worldwide. She is also an honored member of the Union of Azerbaijani Writers.
Since 1996, Yeşim Ağaoğlu has been creating modern art using different skills. She has had four solo art shows in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Norway. She has also shown her art in many group exhibitions in countries like Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and the USA. Since 2012, she has been an honored member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan.
Her Artworks
Yeşim Ağaoğlu focuses on creating art using performances, pictures, and objects. At first, her poems, written on yellow paper with a typewriter, were central to her art. These yellow papers are simple materials. But when she arranges them in large piles in art spaces, they become a type of art installation. Even when she is just present in the exhibition space, it feels like a performance. She likes to blend in with the people looking at her art.
Yeşim's art style is simple and humble. She avoids making her art too fancy or popular. She describes her works as "technically simple but conceptually rich." This means they might look simple, but they have deep meanings.
As a photographer, Yeşim Ağaoğlu explores cities. She takes pictures of interesting buildings, different kinds of people, and hidden symbols. She is very aware of the social and political issues in her region. She uses special ways in her art to share her messages. She is good at reaching people who enjoy modern art.
