The yellow-bellied bulbul (Alophoixus phaeocephalus) is a type of songbird that belongs to the bulbul family, called Pycnonotidae. These birds are known for their beautiful songs! You can find them living in the warm, moist forests of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. They love places with lots of trees and plants.

About Its Name and Family

Scientists use a system called taxonomy to name and group all living things. It helps them understand how different animals are related. The yellow-bellied bulbul has had a few different scientific names over the years!

How Its Name Changed

When the yellow-bellied bulbul was first discovered, it was placed in a group called Ixos. Later, it was moved to another group called Trichixos, which isn't used anymore. Then, it was put into the group Criniger. Finally, in 2009, scientists decided it best fit into the group Alophoixus. This shows how scientists keep learning and updating our knowledge about the natural world!

Other Names for This Bird

This bird has many different common names! Sometimes people call it the crestless white-throated bulbul, grey-capped bulbul, grey-headed bearded bulbul, grey-headed bulbul, white-throated bulbul, or yellow-bellied bearded-bulbul. It can be a bit confusing because some of these names are also used for other types of bulbuls! For example, the name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used for the yellow-bellied greenbul. Also, the name 'grey-headed bulbul' is used for a different species called Pycnonotus priocephalus, and 'white-throated bulbul' is used for Alophoixus flaveolus.

Different Types of Yellow-bellied Bulbuls

Just like there are different breeds of dogs, there are also different types of yellow-bellied bulbuls, called subspecies. These are slightly different versions of the same species, often found in different places. There are four main subspecies:

  • A. p. phaeocephalus: You can find this one on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.
  • A. p. connectens: This subspecies lives in the north-eastern part of Borneo.
  • A. p. diardi: This one is found in western Borneo.
  • A. p. sulphuratus: This subspecies lives in central Borneo.
