Yepes is a beautiful villa, or town, located in the northern part of the Toledo province in Spain. It is part of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha.

Yepes: A Look at Its Population

Yepes has been home to people for a very long time. The earliest records of its population go back to the year 1534. At that time, about 4,000 to 5,000 people lived there.

In the 20th century, the population of Yepes was recorded as 4,767 people in 2005. By 2006, the number grew slightly to about 5,200 residents.

Where is Yepes? Its Geography

Yepes is located in the westernmost part of a region known as La Mesa de Ocaña. This area is a plateau near the town of Ocaña.

Yepes shares its borders with several other towns:

  • To the north, it borders Aranjuez (in the province of Madrid), Ciruelos, and Ocaña (both in Toledo).
  • To the east, it borders Ocaña.
  • To the south, it borders Villaseca de Yepes and Huerta de Valdecarábanos (both in Toledo).
  • To the west, it borders Aranjuez and Almonacid (both in Toledo).

The Long History of Yepes

Yepes has a very old history, with the first signs of human life dating back to about 600 BC. This was a village founded by the Celtiberians, an ancient group of people in Spain.

Long ago, Yepes was known by different names like Hippo or Hippona. This was when the Celtiberians lived there and even defeated Roman soldiers. The town's current name, Yepes, comes from the time when Muslims ruled the area. They called it Hepes. Over time, this name changed to Hiepes, then Iepes, and finally Yepes. It's possible that Hepes was a Mozarabic name, which means it came from the language spoken by Christians living under Muslim rule.

Later, during the rule of King Alfonso VII, Yepes and its castle were given to the Council of San Nicolás.

Famous Buildings and Monuments in Yepes

Plaza Mayor: The Main Square

The main square of Yepes, called Plaza Mayor, used to have a triangular shape. On its sides were the Church and the Archiepiscopal Palace. An administrative building was at its base. In the 16th century, this square was a popular place for shows and performances. People at the time also mentioned that there was a good inn there.

In the 18th century, the Archiepiscopal Palace was changed. It was made into 19 homes for people who lived in caves, and a slaughterhouse was also built. These changes gave the square its rectangular shape that we see today.

Colegiata de San Benito Abad: The Church

This impressive church is dedicated to Saint Benito. It was designed by Alonso de Covarrubias, who was a master builder for the Toledo Cathedral. The church is a beautiful building made of white stone. It shows a mix of late Gothic and early Renaissance styles.

The church has three main sections, called naves. It also has two rows of side chapels and a tall tower that stands 70 meters (about 230 feet) high.
