Early Life and Education
Yisroel Moshe Friedman was born on July 23, 1955, in Brooklyn, New York. His father was Rabbi Avrohom Yaakov Friedman, and his mother was Rebbitzen Tziporah Feiga Friedman. He was named after two important rabbis: Rabbi Yisrael Friedman and Rabbi Moshe Friedman.
At the time of his birth, his grandfather, Rabbi Mordechai Sholom Yosef Friedman, was the Sadigura Rebbe. Yisroel Moshe attended Yeshivas Ruzhin for his younger studies. Later, he went to the Ponevezh Yeshiva, where he became one of their best students.
Living in London
In 1979, Friedman married Sara Feldman, who was from London. They decided to live in the Stamford Hill area of London. A few months after his wedding, his grandfather passed away. His father then became the new Rebbe.
In 1993, he opened a synagogue called Ohr Yisrael in Golders Green, London. He built strong relationships with the people in that community. He also worked as a dayan, which is a Rabbinic judge, in London.
Deep Knowledge of Torah
Friedman was known for his amazing knowledge of the Torah. He understood not only Chassidic works but also many other areas of Jewish law. His deep understanding of the Shas (Jewish texts) and poskim (Jewish legal rulings) was well-known.
He received semicha (Rabbinic ordination) from several leading Orthodox Jewish rabbis. These included Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, Rabbi Chanoch Henoch Padwa, Rabbi Yitzchak Yaakov Weiss, and Rabbi Shmuel Wosner.
Becoming a Rebbe
After his father passed away on January 1, 2013, Friedman moved from London to Israel. There, he was chosen to be the sixth Rebbe of the Sadigura Hasidim. He settled in Bnei Brak, where the Sadigura community is based.
As Rebbe, he focused on making everyone feel welcome in the Hasidic group. He wanted to make sure no one felt left out. He became known as one of the most important rabbis in Israel. He was also a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, a council of leading rabbis.
Around 2018, Rabbi Friedman became ill with pancreatic cancer. He spent much of 2019 in Los Angeles, getting medical treatments. Even from America, he continued to lead his community. He made sure his followers had what they needed.
In the summer of 2020, he returned to Bnei Brak on a special private flight. This was because COVID-19 had stopped most air travel. He wanted to be with his community for the Yamim Noraim. On August 10, 2020, Friedman collapsed and was taken to Sheba-Tel Hashomer Hospital. He passed away later that day.
