Yonrico Scott's Music Journey
Early Life and Learning Music
Yonrico Scott grew up in Detroit, Michigan. His family encouraged his strong interest in music. He started drum lessons when he was just seven years old.
For a while, Yonrico focused on playing gospel music. By age fourteen, he was known as the best gospel drummer in Detroit. He then learned from George Hamilton, a famous Motown drummer. Yonrico became very interested in R&B music. As a teenager, he worked as a studio musician for many famous artists, including Stevie Wonder.
After high school, Yonrico went to the University of Kentucky. He earned a degree in percussion in 1978. After college, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There, he played and recorded with jazz artists Joe Jennings and Howard Nicholson. They were part of a band called Life Force.
Playing with The Derek Trucks Band
Yonrico Scott joined The Derek Trucks Band in 1995. He was the second permanent member of this blues rock band. The band traveled and performed a lot.
Yonrico stayed with the band as it changed members and its musical style. By 2002, the band's final lineup was complete. It included Mike Mattison (singer) and Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, flute). Yonrico helped write songs and played on all six of the band's studio albums. He also played on their two live albums.
In 2010, Yonrico accepted a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. This award was for the band's 2009 album, Already Free. He accepted it for himself and all the other band members.
Other Music Projects
In late 2009, The Derek Trucks Band took a break. Derek Trucks' wife, Susan Tedeschi, started a new band with Derek called The Tedeschi Trucks Band. Yonrico had recorded on Susan Tedeschi's album, Wait for Me, in 2002.
During 2010, Yonrico played with Earl Klugh. He also performed many shows with his own group, The Yonrico Scott Band.
Yonrico was also the drummer for the Royal Southern Brotherhood. This "supergroup" toured in 27 countries between 2012 and 2013. Yonrico helped write some songs on their first album, released in 2012.
In 2015, Yonrico played drums on Jeremiah Johnson's album, Grind.
Art and Music Connection
Yonrico Scott is also known for his artwork on the album Songlines. He created the illustration for the set list. The album's name came from an Aboriginal idea. This idea says that the world was created by ancient beings who sang everything into existence. These "songlines" were like invisible paths across Australia.
Yonrico's artwork showed this idea on the album cover. It was also part of the stage backdrop during The Derek Trucks Band's tour for the album.
Yonrico's Musical Gear
Yonrico Scott used specific equipment for his drumming. He played Pearl Drums. He also used Zildjian sticks and cymbals. For percussion, he used Lp Percussions and Everyones Drumming gear.
Later Years and Passing
Yonrico Scott recorded his second solo album at Sit-N-Spin Recording Studios. This studio is in Greenville, South Carolina. Yonrico passed away on September 19, 2019, at the age of 63.
