York is a city in Nebraska, United States. It is the main city and the capital of York County, Nebraska. In 2020, about 8,066 people lived here. York is known for being home to York University and the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women.

Exploring York's Past
York was first planned out in 1869. The city got its name from York County, where it is located.
In 1920, the state of Nebraska opened a special facility for women in York. Over the years, this place grew. By 2017, it was known as the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women. It could hold up to 275 people.
York College first opened its doors in the town in 1890. In 2022, the college became a university and changed its name to York University.

York is located where two major highways meet. These are Interstate 80, which goes east and west, and U.S. Route 81, which goes north and south.

Culture and Attractions in York
The Art Deco York Auditorium was built in 1940. It was designed by Meginnis and Schaumberg.
In 2001, a special place called Lee's Legendary Marbles and Collectables opened. By 2023, it was known for having the largest collection of marbles in the world!
Learning and Education in York
The schools in York are part of the York Public Schools School District. These include York Elementary School, York Middle School, and York High School.
York also has two private schools. Emmanuel-Faith Lutheran School opened in 1957. It has a preschool at Faith Lutheran Church and grades K-8 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. St. Joseph Catholic School opened in 1890 and teaches children from preschool to 8th grade.
York University is a private college in York. It is connected with the Churches of Christ. It was founded in 1890.
News and Radio in York
York had several newspapers in the 1800s. The York Democrat started in 1883. The York Republican was another popular newspaper back then. Today, York's main newspaper is the York News-Times.
York also has two radio stations. They have been locally owned since they first started in 1954. KAWL (AM 1370) and KTMX (FM 1970) provide news, sports, music, and fun to York and nearby areas.
