Yuriy Valeryevich Nikiforov (born on September 16, 1970) is a well-known football coach and a former player. He mostly played as a central defender, which is a player who helps protect the goal. Today, he works as an assistant coach for the Russian national team.

Yuriy Nikiforov's Club Journey
Yuriy Nikiforov was born in Odesa, Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union back then. He began his professional football career with his hometown club, Chornomorets Odesa.
After a short time with Dynamo Kyiv, where he played for their reserve team, he went back to Chornomorets Odesa. He even played in the very first season of the Ukrainian Premier League in 1992.
Playing for Spartak Moscow
In 1993, Yuriy moved to Russia and joined Spartak Moscow. He was a very important player in their defense. Spartak Moscow won three Premier League titles out of four during his time there. Yuriy also scored goals regularly, which is impressive for a defender!
Playing in Europe and Japan
Yuriy then moved to Spain to play for Sporting de Gijón. He joined at the same time as his friend Dmitri Cheryshev. After his team was moved to a lower league in 1998, Yuriy played for five years in the Netherlands.
He started with PSV Eindhoven, where he helped them win the Eredivisie (the top Dutch league) two times in a row. For the 2002–03 season, he joined RKC Waalwijk, another Dutch team. He finished his playing career in Japan, playing for Urawa Red Diamonds for one year.
Yuriy Nikiforov's International Career
Yuriy Nikiforov played for a few different national teams. In 1992, he played four games for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This team was formed after the Soviet Union broke up. They played in the European Championship that year, but Yuriy wasn't in the final squad.
He then briefly played for the Ukrainian national team in 1992. After that, he decided to play for Russia.
Playing for Russia
With the Russian national team, Yuriy played in two FIFA World Cup tournaments: 1994 and 2002. He also played in UEFA Euro 1996. In total, he played eight major tournament matches for Russia. However, the team always left the competition in the group stage.
In 2009, Yuriy was part of the Russian team that won the Legends Cup, a tournament for former football stars.
Yuriy Nikiforov's Coaching Career
After he stopped playing football, Yuriy Nikiforov became a coach. He worked as an assistant coach for teams like FC Kuban Krasnodar and FC Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Premier League. He often worked with his former teammate, Dmitri Khokhlov.
Since August 12, 2022, he has been an assistant coach for the Russia national football team, working with head coach Valeri Karpin.
Yuriy Nikiforov's Personal Life
Yuriy Nikiforov has an older brother named Oleksandr. Oleksandr was also a football player. He played for Chornomorets Odesa several times and even played with Yuriy from 1989 to 1990.
