Zagazig (Arabic: الزقازيق az-Zaqāzīq) is a city in Egypt. It is found in the eastern part of the Nile delta. Zagazig is the capital city of the Sharqia region.
The city is located on the Muweis Canal. It is an important center for trading corn and cotton. There is also a museum of ancient items here. It is called the Sharkeya National Museum. This museum has many important old objects. It is currently closed for repairs.
Zagazig University is one of the biggest universities in Egypt. It has many different study areas, like science and arts. The university also has its own museum. This museum shows important finds from nearby ancient sites. These sites are called Bubastis and Kufur Nigm.
Zagazig is the hometown of some famous Egyptians. These include Salama Moussa, a journalist and thinker. Morsi Gameel Aziz, a well-known songwriter, was also born here. The main streets in Zagazig are Farouk Street, Government Street, Abu Hamad, and El Kawmia Street.
History of Zagazig
The city of Zagazig was built in the 1800s. It was built where a village called Nazlat az-Zaqāzīq once stood. This village was named after the Zaqzuq family. The name Zaqzuq means "a small creature" like a fish or an insect.
Ancient Bubastis
The ruins of the ancient Egyptian city of Bubastis are very close to Zagazig. They are about 3 kilometers southeast of the city. Bubastis was once the capital of an ancient Egyptian region. It was famous for a festival honoring the cat goddess Bastet.
Bubastis is the Greek name for the Egyptian city Pr-Bastet. This means "House of Bastet". Bubastis became the capital of Egypt during the 22nd and 23rd Dynasties. You can still see parts of temples built by ancient pharaohs like Osorkon II and Nectanebo II. There are also old burial places for sacred cats. These are found behind an ancient chapel from the time of Pepi I Meryre.

Zagazig has a hot desert climate. This is typical for most of Egypt. It means the city is very hot and dry.
