Zayed University was created by the UAE government in 1998. For its first ten years, only women from the UAE could study there. In 2008, the university opened a new campus in Sweihan. This campus was for men, in partnership with the UAE Armed Forces.
What is Accreditation?
Accreditation means a university meets high standards for its education. Zayed University is approved by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation. It is also approved by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
In 2024, Zayed University was ranked among the top 701–710 universities in the world by QS World Rankings. In 2022, it was ranked 20th in the QS World University Arab Rankings.
The university first received its U.S. accreditation in 2008. It was approved again in 2013. The university is currently working with the accreditation commission to meet all required standards.
The College of Education also has a special approval. It received accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education in 2013. This was for its B.S. Communication and Media Sciences program.
What Can You Study?
Zayed University offers many different study programs. Students can choose from seventeen main subjects. They can also pick ten smaller subjects to study. The university also offers ten master's degrees for advanced studies.

Learning Through Research
Zayed University helps students and teachers do research. They offer special training and money to support new ideas. In 2014, the university spent about 4.6 million UAE dirhams on research projects.
Grants for Research
- Research Incentive Funds (RIF): These grants help teachers with their research. Projects can last one or two years. They help improve the research culture at the university. Teachers can get between 30,000 AED and 150,000 AED for their projects.
- Research Clusters: This program started in 2016. It helps teachers from different subjects work together. Each project can get up to 50,000 AED.
Student Research
The Undergraduate Research Scholars Program began in 2010. It helps university students do their own research. The program gives students mentors (teachers who guide them). It also offers workshops and lessons. Students work on their projects for about two and a half years. They are expected to create new research. This research is then sent to international academic journals.
University Campuses
Abu Dhabi Campus
In 2009, Zayed University planned a new campus in Abu Dhabi. This was to help more students in the capital city. A German architect named Hadi Teherani designed the campus. He was inspired by the desert around it. The campus was finished and opened in 2011. It is located in Zayed City in Abu Dhabi. The campus covers a large area of 77 hectares.
Dubai Campus
The university's Dubai campus moved to its current spot in 2006. It is in Al Ruwayyah, near Academic City. Before that, it was in the northern part of the Abu Dhabi peninsula.
In November 2018, a new food court was built at the Zayed University Dubai campus. It is located in Academic City.
University Leadership
The university's leadership has changed over the years. Many people have served as provost, a senior leader, since 1998.
In 2013, Maitha Al Shamsi became president. She was followed by Lubna Khalid Al Qasimi in 2014. In July 2023, Shamma Al Mazrui was appointed as the new head of the board of trustees. She is also the UAE's Minister of Community Development.
